JAZ Elite Aurora Zanzibar Is Creating its Own Version of Island Luxury

JAZ Elite Aurora Zanzibar brings a modern edge to island luxury, with beach days, adventure and plenty to explore.

Scene Traveller

Luxury in Zanzibar has a fairly established formula: a beautiful beach, warm water, somewhere to watch the sunset and very little reason to check the time.

JAZ Elite Aurora Zanzibar, part of the the JAZ Elite Hotel collection, is taking that formula somewhere else.

Set on the southeast coast of the island in Michamvi, the latest resort from Egyptian hospitality pioneer JAZ Hotel Group brings contemporary design and high-end hospitality into a setting that already has plenty of natural drama. But the modernity here is not about stripping away what makes Zanzibar special. It's about expanding what a stay on the island can look like.

A day at JAZ Elite Aurora Zanzibar can start in the Indian Ocean and end over dinner at the jetty. There is diving, water activities and horseback riding for those who want to get out and explore, outdoor padel courts offer a more competitive sporting experience, and Mividaspa, the gym and sunset yoga for days that call for a slower pace.

Then there is the beach, sitting directly in front of the resort, with tropical greenery and warm Indian Ocean waters surrounding the property. Contemporary architecture, open spaces and pools give the resort its modern edge, while the setting keeps Zanzibar firmly in the picture.

The same balance runs through the 346 accommodations, spanning Superior and Deluxe Rooms, Swim-Up Rooms, Executive Suites, Villas and Royal Suites. The collection includes 150 Superior Rooms, 150 Deluxe Rooms, 32 Superior and Deluxe Swim-Up Rooms, four Executive Suites, four Executive Swim-Up Rooms, four Villas and two Royal Suites.

The experience shifts again when the sun starts moving. Sunset yoga takes place beside the beach and jetty, while different viewpoints around the resort offer their own perspectives on sunrise and sunset. It is an easy reminder that, in Zanzibar, even doing nothing can have a very good view.

Food gives the evenings their own character. Pilipili serves sushi, Samaki brings seafood to the jetty, Moto serves teppanyaki in the same waterside setting, and Breeze Bar & Restaurant brings Mediterranean dining beside the water, while Mwamba Grill serves up rich barbque. Five restaurants means the choice is not simply what to eat, but where and how you want the evening to feel.

The resort also makes room for a different kind of holiday. Families have a dedicated Kids’ Club, family experiences and a water park, while couples can settle into the beach, wellness and dining. Travellers looking for more adventure have the sea, the surrounding landscape and plenty of ways to stay active.

All of it is grounded in Michamvi and the wider character of Zanzibar, from its landscapes and waters to its culture and flavours. The destination gives JAZ Elite Aurora Zanzibar its setting; the resort gives that setting a contemporary way to experience it.

That's what makes the idea of modern island luxury work here. It 's not about 'reimagining' Zanzibar. It is about giving travellers more ways to enjoy what is already there, with the comfort, design and variety of a resort that can keep up with however they want to spend the day.
