48 Hours in Tunis

If one were to describe Tunis in one word, “compact" might be the one to do the city justice. With less than a million inhabitants living in an area fourteen times smaller than Cairo, the magic of this city lies hidden somewhere between the past, the present and a winding alleyway. 

Founded by the Berbers and expanded by the Phoenicians, Tunis has been a crucible of cultures over millennia – from Roman and Ottoman influences to French colonial elements. Wandering through its medina, you're as likely to stumble upon a 7th-century mosque as a contemporary art gallery.

Friday

8:00 am – Breakfast at El Ali Café Restaurant & Culture

Escape the hustle and bustle with a visit to Belvedere Park, the largest of its kind in Tunis. Enjoy a leisurely stroll among its lush gardens and take in panoramic views of the city from the hilltop. The park also houses the Tunis Zoological Garden, perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

6:00 pm – Traditional Thrills at Carthage Land 

For a more modern twist, visit Carthage Land, an amusement park themed around the history of Carthage. Located in the Les Berges du Lac area, this park offers fun rides and attractions for all ages, blending history with entertainment. It's a great spot to have some cultured fun as the day winds down. 

8:00 pm – Dinner with a View at La Villa Didon 

Conclude your first day with dinner at La Villa Didon, fusing Mediterranean and Tunisian cuisines. Situated in the ancient city of Carthage, this chic restaurant offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Carthaginian ruins. 

Saturday

8:00 am – Morning Brew at Le Grand Café du Théâtre 

Start your day at Le Grand Café du Théâtre, a popular spot near the Tunis Theatre. Munch on a classic French breakfast of croissants and café au lait while soaking up the lively atmosphere of downtown Tunis. 

10:00 am – Historic Exploration at the Ruins of Carthage 

Dedicate your morning to exploring the ancient ruins of Carthage. There’s no shortage of historic relics here, from the Roman amphitheatre and the Baths of Antoninus to the Punic Ports. The vast archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur of this historic city, once a major powerhouse in the Mediterranean. 

12:00 pm – Seafood Spread at Chez Slah 

For lunch, head to Chez Slah, a local favourite known for its fresh seafood. Located near the Carthage ruins, this unassuming restaurant serves up delicious dishes like grilled fish and seafood couscous in a cosy, unpretentious setting.

2:00 pm – Art and Culture at Sidi Bou Said

Spend the afternoon in the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said, just a short drive from Carthage. Known for its white-washed buildings with blue accents, this charming area is a hub for artists and musicians. 6:00 pm – Marveling at the Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul

8:00 pm – Farewell Feast at Au Bons Vieux Temps 

In December of 1942, French author André Gide moved from Paris to Tunis and stayed in what is now Au Bon Vieux Temps, a restaurant in Sidi Bou Saïd overlooking the Mediterranean. Au Bon Vieux Temps is a window into France’s culinary influence over Tunisia with an unforgettable view— the perfect denouement for an unforgettable trip.
