The Train Between Medina & Mecca Will Be Driven By Saudi Arabian Women
The first batch of Saudi female train drivers just graduated from the Saudi Railways Authority programme.
The Saudi Railways Authority has finished training and graduating 32 women to drive the Haramain Express Train, the fastest train in the Kingdom - and the only one that provides trips between Medina and Mecca, where Muslims around the globe go for their pilgrimages.
The Haramain High-Speed Rail was launched in 2018, aiming to serve 60 million passengers annually. It operates via electricity and travels 460 km between Mecca and Medina in only two hours and 45 minutes. In recent years, the Kingdom has witnessed extensive transformations, allowing women to drive by royal order in 2017, as well as the enrollment of women in the main branches of the armed forces with different military ranks, and the right for women to obtain a passport and leave the country without requiring the consent of a guardian.
