A catalyst for cultural reckonings, the Guggenheim museum is an indelible emblem for global artistic movements. After garnering mass appreciation on the bustling streets of New York City’s Fifth Avenue, the UNESCO heritage site began looking outside of its western periphery to spotlight art from varied cultural backgrounds.

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi - which aims to be the region's leading museum of modern and contemporary art - promotes a better understanding of the multitude of artistic viewpoints that have influenced the interwoven histories and cultures of our time. The museum’s emphasis on West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia (WANASA) acts as a focal point from which other international art is spotlighted; allowing the museum to devote the majority of its installations to creating a region-centric educational community.

The Saadiyat Cultural District will be home to the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, with collections approximately covering 600 works dating from around 1960 and spanning artistic media, multiple generations of artists, and an ever-widening number of nations and areas. The museum also investigates particular contexts and histories, highlights sites of junction and transcultural exchange and honours outstanding accomplishments.

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is planned to open in 2025.
