There’s a reason why people think of Egypt as a land of adventure, and no it’s not because of the third reboot of ‘The Mummy’ making the country all about tombs and pharaohs and ancient curses. From Red Sea dives to off-road treks in the Western Desert, Doroub Adventures is a tight-knit, non-profit community of travel junkies and adrenaline chasers who are out there and seeing what adventure in Egypt is all about.

“We love watching people convert from being scared, to becoming full blown adventurers,” Ahmed el Refai, one of Doroub’s founders, tells SceneTraveller. “We’re not commercial, we’re all volunteers with varying levels of experience. Eventually we became a crew of diverse people with many different interests. Some of us organise intermediate trips, and some of us organise trips for beginners.”

Amongst their most notable and challenging trips is the ‘Passage des Fou’, aka ‘The Crazy’s Passage’. Located way out in the Western Desert between New Valley’s Kharga and Djara Cave, Doroub Adventures went on an epic off-road trip for seven days without any contact with civilization.

So far, Doroub has gone rock climbing in Wadi Gnai and Wadi Hamam, gone on desert safaris at the Siwa Oasis, dived deep in the waters of Hurghada, walked the Qaroun Trail, and climbed Sinai’s Jebel Serbal aka the much underrated ‘King of the South’. Not to mention their smaller outings to engage in activities such as paragliding in the desert!

“There is a lot that is yet to be explored, there are places we weren’t allowed to go in the past,” el Refai says. “But that changed and we plan on exploring every inch of Egypt.”

And while they may never be done experiencing everything Egypt has to offer, Doroub Adventures have ambitions to strike out and explore the rest of the world in the future. For now, you can join them on their Egyptian escapades by clicking the link in bio on their Instagram page, @doroubadventures. Their trips vary in cost, as the price is essentially split amongst each of the participants.
