A Robot Supermodel Will Serve You at Dubai's Donna Cyber-Café
She really is a barbie girl in a barbie world.
Could baristas become a thing of the past? In our inevitable sci-fi future, where robots and AI are slowly creeping their way across all kinds of industries, will we lose our sassy coffee experts who constantly mispronounce our names (no matter how many times we order from them), in exchange for the cool efficiency of android workers? If it would happen anywhere, it would be Dubai, where this eerily human-like robot cashier will be serving beverages and engaging in conversation with clients at Donna Cyber-Cafe, which is scheduled to open its doors next year. The cafe is led by a robot named Donna, who was designed to look like an exact replica of Eastern European model Diana Gabdullina, with silicone skin and hyper-realistic eyes (dare you stare too deeply in them?). Donna is a Robo-C2 - a humanoid robot that is designed to look like a human, talk and express emotions like a human, and interact with humans. But unlike most humans, she doesn’t need to eat or sleep, which would explain why the cafe will be open 24/7. Despite its futuristic awe, the cafe will maintain an old-school American diner aesthetic, with a soft-serve ice-cream machine, a soft drink dispenser, and a coffee machine. Just make sure you don’t forget your tip at the self-service terminal.
