Dubai Could Get World’s Biggest Aerotropolis for USD 33 Billion
The project by Dubai World Central aims to become the world’s largest airport by 2050.
As one of the world’s most popular destinations for fly-overs and increasingly a desired travel destination in its own right, Dubai is welcoming an increasing international footfall each year. In light of this, the Dubai World Central is planning to restart its USD 33 billion airport expansion project, aiming to become the world's largest airport by 2050.
The expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport will increase the aerotropolis’ capacity to 130 million passengers annually in its first phase, with the total development spreading across 56 square kilometres.
Following the economic challenges onset by the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport’s expansion is expected to give the region a much-needed boost in the economy, creating jobs and opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Dubai International airport handled 66.1 million passengers in 2022, and it’s been projected that 78 million passengers will pass through the airport throughout 2023.
Although the pandemic caused delays in the project, talks among officials are ongoing, and potential stakeholders have been advised to prepare for a restart.
