Emirates Bans Inflight Power Bank Use Over Fire Risk Concerns
From October, Emirates passengers can carry but not use certain portable chargers mid-flight under new safety measures aimed at preventing inflight battery-related incidents.

Emirates is introducing stricter rules on power banks after a review highlighted an increased risk of battery-related incidents in aviation. From October 1st, passengers may carry one power bank under 100 watt hours, but it cannot be used to charge devices or be charged during the flight.
The airline’s ban follows a rise in lithium battery fires linked to portable chargers. While most modern devices have safeguards to prevent overcharging, many basic power banks do not, increasing the risk of 'thermal runaway' - a chain reaction that can cause overheating, fires and even explosions. Emirates will require all accepted power banks to display capacity ratings, and they must be stored in a seat pocket or under the seat, not in overhead bins or checked baggage.
By prohibiting inflight use, Emirates says it will reduce the danger posed by portable chargers while keeping them accessible for quick crew response in an emergency. The policy reflects a growing aviation trend of tightening lithium battery rules, as airlines seek to balance passenger convenience with the realities of evolving onboard safety challenges.
